Matt Walsh, Catholic author, and columnist, as well as host of the “Matt Walsh Show Podcast,” released a 2022 film asking the very question, “What is a Woman?”
While the answer may seem completely obvious, it has stirred much controversy and debate.
Within the last two years, people have taken to social media to express their opinions, with many who hold a traditional viewpoint being “canceled.”
However, EWTN Foundress Mother Mary Angelica of the Annunciation, PCPA, answered this question several years ago:
“Ah, What is a Woman? She brings life, new life, she’s like Jesus. She is a go-between, she is an advocate, Jesus intercedes for us to the Father, she is noble because she takes the blame sometimes… She is a friend, she is that warm love you need to grow.” “She’s a mortar between all the brick that make up your family. They make you a house, a home. She saves you from a lot of trouble… she’s an intercessor, she worries about you, constantly prays that you don’t goof off and lose your soul..”
Mother Angelica not only describes so much of what encompasses being a woman, but in turn, a mother:
“An intercessor, a friend..”

One can only think of the Blessed Mother–the most perfect woman and mother to ever exist.
Men can do a lot of things but being a woman is not one of them.
In Genesis, the Bible teaches us this most fundamental aspect of our creation. The Church emphasizes this difference in the Catechism:
“Man and woman have been created, which is to say, willed by God: on the one hand, in perfect equality as human persons; on the other, in their respective beings as man and woman. ‘Being man’ or ‘being woman’ is a reality which is good and willed by God: man and woman possess an inalienable dignity which comes to them immediately from God their Creator. Man and woman are both with one and the same dignity ‘in the image of God’. In their ‘being-man’ and ‘being-woman,’ they reflect the Creator’s wisdom and goodness.” (CCC 369)
The text continues:
“Man and woman were made ‘for each other’ – not that God left them half-made and incomplete: he created them to be a communion of persons, in which each can be ‘helpmate’ to the other, for they are equal as persons (‘bone of my bones. . .’) and complementary as masculine and feminine. In marriage God unites them in such a way that, by forming ‘one flesh’they can transmit human life: ‘Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth.’By transmitting human life to their descendants, man and woman as spouses and parents cooperate in a unique way in the Creator’s work.’” (CCC, 372)
Mother Angelica so wonderfully captures the intricate nature of being a woman and only inculcates further what we are taught in the Bible and the Catechism.
A woman, co-author of life, partner, intercessor, friend, lover, and mother, is created with intention and purpose. The Lord is clear in the way He made us, in His image. While we are called to be compassionate, we are also called to be truthful. You can’t cancel the truth.
